Education Working Group
provided by United Way of the Quad Cities Area

"Education is the single most powerful means to improve the quality of life... the single most powerful weapon against poverty and intolerance. Education builds a culture of peace ... it empowers human beings, both young and adult, to be effective in their chosen sphere of activity ... education, in its essence, opens doors to both personal and social development."

-- Federico Mayor Zaragoza, Director-General of UNESCO, 1987-1999

As part of our ongoing mission to improve the quality of life for individuals in the Quad Cities area and to improve the vitality of the community as a whole, United Way of the Quad Cities Area has determined to make Education one of the agency's top priorities for funding and community action.

United Way of the Quad Cities Area has chosen three goals which will improve the quality of education in the community:

1. To increase the percentage of children who are school-ready when they enter kindergarten.

2. To increase the percentage of students who are proficient in reading.

3. To increase the percentage of students who complete high school.

United Way will coordinate financial, human, and organizational resources to create new initiatives to address these three goals.  We have established an Education Council of community leaders to oversee this vital work.
